The species Prosthecochloris vibrioformis was originally described by Imhoff 2003. This name was affected by Judicial Opinion 81 in 2008. Imhoff formed this name in 2003 by placing the species
Chlorobium vibrioforme Pelsh 1936 (Approved Lists 1980)
into the genus Prosthecochloris Gorlenko 1970 (Approved Lists 1980) emend. Imhoff 2003.
