The order Rhodospirillales was originally proposed by Pfennig and Trüper 1971. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. Hördt et al. published an emended description of this order in 2020. Hördt et al. transferred the members of Wiese et al. 2009 into this order in 2020.
