The species Rhodospirillum centenum was originally described by Favinger et al. 1989. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 48 in 1994. Euzéby and Kudo established Rhodospirillum centenum as an earlier homotypic synonym of
Rhodocista centenaria Kawasaki et al. 1994 pro synon. Rhodospirillum centenum Favinger et al. 1994
in 2001.
