The species Rhodospirillum sodomense was originally described by Mack et al. 1993. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 59 in 1996. In 1998, Imhoff et al. established as the basonym of (Mack et al. 1996) Imhoff et al. 1998 .
