The species Azospirillum irakense was originally described by Khammas et al. 1989. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 39 in 1991. In 2014, Lin et al. established Azospirillum irakense as the basonym of
Niveispirillum irakense (Khammas et al. 1991) Hördt et al. 2020
.
