Nomenclatural History
The genus Acetobacter was originally proposed by Beijerinck 1898. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. De Ley and Frateur published an emended description of this genus in 1974.

The trivial name used by Beijerinck 1898 for this group of organisms was Essigbakterien ("vinegar bacteria"), which by 1901 was latinized to Acetobacter. However, Beijerinck 1898 referred to the species as Bacterium aceti and only later employed the name Acetobacter in passing in 1901 (Bergey 1923 cited this genus as Acetobacter Beijerinck 1901 for this reason). Buchanan 1925 (pp.153-154) describes the difficulty in the authority of this genus, and cites the earliest published description as Winslow et al. 1920 (which was based on Fuhrmann 1905, who provided the earliest description of an organism placed into this genus, A. plicatum). Winslow et al. 1920 followed the recommendation of the Committee of the Society of American Bacteriologists to ascribe the genus to Fuhrmann. However, Winslow had cited the type species as Acetobacter aceti (Thompson 1852) Committee, but this was later corrected to Acetobacter aceti (Pasteur 1864) Beijerinck 1898.
