The species Acetobacter europaeus was originally described by Sievers et al. 1992. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 43 in 1992. In 1997, Yamada et al. established Acetobacter europaeus as the basonym of
Gluconacetobacter europaeus corrig. (Sievers et al. 1992) Yamada et al. 1998
