The species Acetobacter liquefaciens was originally described by Gosselé et al. 1983. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 12 in 1983. Gosselé et al. elevated the subspecies (Asai 1935) De Ley and Frateur 1974 (Approved Lists 1980) to the rank of species to form this name in 1983. established as an earlier homotypic synonym of (Asai 1935) Yamada and Kondo 1985 pro synon. Acetobacter liquefaciens (Asai 1935) Gosselé et al. 1983 in 2017. established as an earlier homotypic synonym of corrig. (Asai 1935) Yamada et al. 1998 emend. Hördt et al. 2020 pro synon.
