The subspecies Acetobacter pasteurianus lovaniensis was originally described by De Ley and Frateur 1974. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. Lisdiyanti et al. elevated this subspecies to the rank of species to form the name (Frateur 1950) Lisdiyanti et al. 2001 in 2000.
