The class Methanobacteria was originally proposed by Boone 2001. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 85 in 2002. This name replaces the name Murray 1988 .

Although Archaeobacteria has priority as the earlier homotypic synonym of this taxon, Methanobacteria is the name considered to be in current use.
