The species Gluconobacter asaii was originally described and validly published by Mason and Claus 1989. Katsura et al. established this name as a later heterotypic synonym of
Gluconobacter cerinus (ex Asai 1935) Yamada and Akita 1984 emend. Hördt et al. 2020
in 2002.
