Nomenclatural History
The genus Methanobacterium was originally proposed by Kluyver and van Niel 1936. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. This name was affected by Judicial Opinion 79 in 2005. Bryant published an emended description of this genus in 1974. A subsequent emendation was proposed by in 1979.
