The species Methanobacterium arbophilicum was originally described by Zeikus and Henning 1975. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. In 1979, Balch et al. established Methanobacterium arbophilicum as the basonym of
Methanobrevibacter arboriphilus corrig. Balch et al. 1981
