The species Rickettsia sibirica was originally described by Zdrodovskii 1948. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. Hördt et al. published an emended description of this species in 2020. In 2015, reduced this species to the rank of subspecies to form (Zdrodovskii 1948) None 2015 .
