The species Rickettsia tsutsugamushi was originally described by Ogata 1931. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. In 1995, Tamura et al. established as the basonym of (Hayashi 1920) Tamura et al. 1995 emend. Hördt et al. 2020 .
