The species Anaplasma phagocytophilum was originally described and validly published by Dumler et al. 2001. List Editor corrected this name from (sic) to . Dumler et al. established this name as an earlier heterotypic synonym of Lewis et al. 1988 in 2001. Dumler et al. formed this name in 2001 by placing the species (Foggie 1949) Philip 1962 (Approved Lists 1980) into the genus Theiler 1910 (Approved Lists 1980) emend. Dumler et al. 2001.
