Isolated from water-courses at Bogor, Java. According to Thompson and Skerman (1979), "There appear to be no extant type strains of Azotobacter insignis Derx 1951. Strain WR-51 could be designated as a neotype strain of Azotobacter insignis Derx 1951 and could be designated as another type strain of Azomonas insignis (Derx) V. Jensen 1955."
