The American Type Culture Collection (ATCC) was able to successfully extract DNA from one of the 32 year-old lyophilised co-cultures and sequence the 16S rRNA gene of V. chlorellavorus (Genbank acc. no. HM038000). Comparative analyses of this sequence indicate that V. chlorellavorus is actually a member of the phylum Cyanobacteria rather than the Proteobacteria according to the Greengenes (McDonald et al., 2012) and Silva (Quast et al., 2013) taxonomies.
