The species Deinococcus mumbaiensis was originally described by Shashidhar and Bandekar 2006. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 109 in 2006. Kämpfer established this name as a later heterotypic synonym of
Deinococcus ficus Lai et al. 2006 emend. García-López et al. 2019
in 2009.
