The species Sphingobium fuliginis was originally described and validly published by Prakash and Lal 2006. Feng et al. published an emended description of this species in 2019. Feng et al. established this name as an earlier heterotypic synonym of
Sphingobium barthaii Maeda et al. 2015
in 2019.
