Nomenclatural History
The species Mycobacterium massiliense was originally described by Adékambi et al. 2004. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 111 in 2006. In 2016, Tortoli et al. reduced this species to the rank of subspecies to form (Adékambi et al. 2006) Tortoli et al. 2016 emend. Nouioui et al. 2018 .

The unification of this species into Mycobacterium bolletii possibly contravenes the Code, since the type exemplar would lose its status as a nomenclatural type. In 2016 a competing taxonomic opinion reduced this species in rank to Mycobacterium abscessus subsp. massiliense, then a subsequent new combination created Mycobacteroides abscessus massiliense, which should be the current taxon for this strain. The rules of priority would state that the 2011 unification would have resulted in the type strain of this species not having standing in nomenclature as a non-type strain of Mycobacterium bolletii.
