The species Alcaligenes faecalis was originally described by Castellani and Chalmers 1919. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. Rehfuss and Urban published an emended description of this species in 2005. In 1981, Austin et al. reduced this species to the rank of subspecies to form
Alcaligenes faecalis faecalis Castellani and Chalmers 1919 (Approved Lists 1980)
