Nomenclatural History
The species Byssophaga cruenta was originally described by Thaxter 1897. It pre-dated the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names but was excluded from those lists. In 2005 the name was revived by Reichenbach. Reichenbach et al. replaced this illegitimate name with (ex Thaxter 1897) Reichenbach et al. 2006 in 2006.

The generic name Byssophaga is illegitimate, therefore the species name is also illegitimate.
