The species Campylobacter fetus was originally described by Sebald and Véron 1963. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. In 1973, Véron and Chatelain reduced this species to the rank of subspecies to form (Smith and Taylor 1919) Sebald and Véron 1963 (Approved Lists 1980) .
