The species Corynebacterium michiganense was originally described by Jensen 1934. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. In 1982, Carlson and Vidaver reduced this species to the rank of subspecies to form
Corynebacterium michiganense michiganense (Smith 1910) Jensen 1982
. In 1984, Davis et al. established Corynebacterium michiganense as the basonym of
Clavibacter michiganensis corrig. (Smith 1910) Davis et al. 1984 emend. Nouioui et al. 2018
.
