The subspecies Enterobacter cloacae cloacae was originally described by Hoffmann et al. 2005. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 104 in 2005. In 2005, Hoffmann et al. reduced (Jordan 1890) Hormaeche and Edwards 1960 (Approved Lists 1980) to the rank of subspecies.
