The species Fusobacterium necrophorum was originally described by Moore and Holdeman 1969. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. In 1991, Shinjo et al. reduced this species to the rank of subspecies to form (ex Flügge 1886) Shinjo et al. 1991 .
