Nomenclatural History
The species Fusobacterium nucleatum was originally described by Knorr 1922. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. In 1990, Dzink et al. reduced this species to the rank of subspecies to form (Knorr 1922) Dzink et al. 1990 .

Kook et al. 2017 and Kook et al. 2020 attempted to elevate the coordinate status subspecies back to the species level by also elevating all subspecies to the species level. Unfortunately, incorrect basonyms were indicated, and Fusobacterium nucleatum subsp. fusiforme remained in this species, preventing the full division of this species. Kook et al. 2022 corrects the basonyms and removes only three subspecies.
