Nomenclatural History	The species Lactococcus lactis was originally described by Schleifer et al. 1985. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 20 in 1986. In 1985, Schleifer et al. reduced this species to the rank of subspecies to form Lactococcus lactis lactis (Lister 1873) Schleifer et al. 1986 . Schleifer et al. formed this name in 1985 by placing the species Streptococcus lactis (Lister 1873) Löhnis 1909 (Approved Lists 1980) into the genus Lactococcus Schleifer et al. 1986.
