Nomenclatural History
The species Pasteurella multocida was originally described by Rosenbusch and Merchant 1939. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. This name was placed onto the nomina taxorum conservanda by Judicial Opinion 58 in 1985. Mutters et al. published an emended description of this species in 1985. Skerman et al. established as an earlier homotypic synonym of (Burrill 1883) Buchanan 1925 (Approved Lists 1980) pro synon. Pasteurella multocida (Lehmann and Neumann 1899) Rosenbusch and Merchant 1939 (Approved Lists 1980) emend. Mutters et al. 1985 in 1980. In 1985, Mutters et al. reduced this species to the rank of subspecies to form (Lehmann and Neumann 1899) Mutters et al. 1985 .
