The species Photorhabdus asymbiotica was originally described and validly published by Fischer-Le Saux et al. 1999. Akhurst et al. published an emended description of this species in 2004. A subsequent emendation was proposed by Machado et al. in 2018. In 2004, Akhurst et al. reduced this species to the rank of subspecies to form
