The species Salmonella choleraesuis was originally described by Weldin 1927. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. This name was affected by Judicial Opinion 26 in 1963. This name was affected by Judicial Opinion 80 in 2005. Farmer corrected this name from (sic) to . In 1982, Le Minor et al. reduced this species to the rank of subspecies to form corrig. (Smith 1894) Le Minor et al. 1985 . Tindall et al. replaced this name with (ex Kauffmann and Edwards 1952) Le Minor and Popoff 1987 in 2005.
