The species Selenomonas ruminantium was originally described by Wenyon 1926. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. In 1956, Bryant reduced this species to the rank of subspecies to form (Certes 1889) Wenyon 1926 emend. Bryant 1974 (Approved Lists 1980) .
