This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 115 in 2007. The subspecies Xanthomonas citri malvacearum was originally described by Smith 1901. It pre-dated the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names but was excluded from those lists. In 2006 the name was revived by Schaad et al..
