The species Gluconobacter sphaericus was originally described by Malimas et al. 2008. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 124 in 2008. Malimas et al. elevated the subspecies
Gluconobacter oxydans sphaericus Ameyama 1975 (Approved Lists 1980)
to the rank of species to form this name in 2008.
