Nomenclatural History
The subspecies Vibrio alginolyticus iophagus was originally described by Welton and Woods 1973. It pre-dated the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names but was excluded from those lists. In 1983 the name was revived and validly published by Emod et al..

A chemovar. has no standing in nomenclature, according to the International Code of Nomenclature of Bacteria. Therefore, Vibrio alginolyticus chemovar. iophagus is an illegitimate name.
