The species Desulfovibrio aerotolerans was originally described by Mogensen et al. 2005. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 125 in 2009. In 2020, Waite et al. established Desulfovibrio aerotolerans as the basonym of
Solidesulfovibrio aerotolerans (Mogensen et al. 2009) Waite et al. 2020
