The species Desulfovibrio aerotolerans was originally described by Mogensen et al. 2005. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 125 in 2009. In 2020, Waite et al. established as the basonym of (Mogensen et al. 2009) Waite et al. 2020 .
