The genus Sphaerosporangium was originally proposed by Ara and Kudo 2007. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 118 in 2007. Upon validation, this name was corrected from (sic) to . Cao et al. published an emended description of this genus in 2009. A subsequent emendation was proposed by Mingma et al. in 2014.
