The subspecies Desulfovibrio africanus africanus was originally described and validly published by Castañeda-Carrión et al. 2010. In 2010, Castañeda-Carrión et al. reduced
Desulfovibrio africanus Campbell et al. 1966 (Approved Lists 1980)
to the rank of subspecies. In 2019, Spring et al. established Desulfovibrio africanus africanus as the basonym of
Desulfocurvibacter africanus africanus (Campbell et al. 1966) Spring et al. 2019
