The class Oxyphotobacteria was originally proposed by Murray 1984. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 25 in 1988. Murray elevated the subclass Gibbons and Murray 1978 to the rank of class to form this name in 1984.

Soo et al. 2017, "We therefore propose to reinstigate the name Oxyphotobacteria (Gibbons and Murray 1978) to describe all photosynthetic cyanobacteria (including chloroplasts) in a single class. Gr. adj. oxus, acidor sour and in combined words indicating oxygen; Gr. n. phos photos, light; Gr. n. bak.te'ri.a, staff, cane; suff. -ia, ending to denote a class; N.L. neut. pl. n. Oxyphotobacteria, light-requiring bacteria that produce oxygen."
