The species Desulfovibrio portus was originally described by Suzuki et al. 2009. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 136 in 2010. In 2016, Cao et al. established Desulfovibrio portus as the basonym of
Pseudodesulfovibrio portus (Suzuki et al. 2010) Cao et al. 2016
.
