The subspecies Photorhabdus temperata stackebrandtii was originally described by An and Grewal 2010. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 139 in 2011. Machado et al. elevated this subspecies to the rank of species to form the name (An and Grewal 2011) Machado et al. 2018 in 2018.
