Nomenclatural History

The species Gluconobacter nephelii was originally described and validly published by Kommanee et al. 2011. Hördt et al. published an emended description of this species in 2020. Li et al. established this name as a later heterotypic synonym of
Gluconobacter japonicus Malimas et al. 2009 emend. Li et al. 2017
in 2017. In 2020, Hördt et al. reduced this species to the rank of subspecies to form
Gluconobacter japonicus nephelii (Kommanee et al. 2011) Hördt et al. 2020
