The species Kosmotoga shengliensis was originally described by Nunoura et al. 2010. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 151 in 2013. Nunoura et al. formed this name in 2010 by placing the species
Thermococcoides shengliensis Feng et al. 2010
into the genus Kosmotoga DiPippo et al. 2009 emend. Nunoura et al. 2010.
