The species Methanolacinia petrolearia was originally described by Göker et al. 2014. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 161 in 2015. Göker et al. formed this name in 2014 by placing the species Ollivier et al. 1998 emend. Göker et al. 2014 into the genus Zellner et al. 1990 emend. Göker et al. 2014.
