The species Geodermatophilus poikilotrophi was originally described by Montero-Calasanz et al. 2014. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 165 in 2015. Upon validation, this name was corrected from (sic) to . Montero-Calasanz et al. published an emended description of this species in 2017.
