The species Proteus terrae was originally described by Behrendt et al. 2015. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 168 in 2016. In 2021, Behrendt et al. reduced this species to the rank of subspecies to form (Behrendt et al. 2016) Behrendt et al. 2021 .
