The species Mycobacterium virginiense was originally described by Vasireddy et al. 2017. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 175 in 2017. In 2018, Gupta et al. established Mycobacterium virginiense as the basonym of
Mycolicibacter virginiensis (Vasireddy et al. 2017) Gupta et al. 2018
.
