The subspecies Treponema pallidum carateum was originally described by 2015. In 2015, reduced (ex Brumpt 1939) Smibert 1984 to the rank of subspecies.

Although some publications refer to the species Treponema carateum as a subspecies of T. pallidum and there are incidental mentions of this name in public databases, no published article has asserted a taxonomic change that supports the reduction in rank from species to subspecies.
