Nomenclatural History
The species Mycolicibacterium vanbaalenii was originally described by Gupta et al. 2018. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 181 in 2018. Gupta et al. formed this name in 2018 by placing the species Khan et al. 2002 emend. Nouioui et al. 2018 into the genus Gupta et al. 2018. Nouioui et al. established this name as a later heterotypic synonym of (Tsukamura et al. 1983) Gupta et al. 2018 in 2018.

Mycobacterium vanbaalenii is a later heterotypic synonym of Mycobacterium austroafricanum. Nouioui was unaware that Gupta et el. 2018 had already moved both species into a novel genus, meaning Mycolicibacterium vanbaalenii is also a later heterotypic synonym of Mycolicibacterium austroafricanum.
